(5) Enriching Knowledge Series for Liberal Studies Curriculum: Health Environmental Hazards and Public Health Responses (New)
Programme Overview
Environmental Health has become an important global issue of this century since many aspects of human health and behaviors are affected by the chemical, biological, physical, and social environments. These factors consist of air, water, soil, diet, exercise, socioeconomic status, toxic chemicals, waste, and more. Environmental hazards cause many diseases such as pneumonia and diarrhea, and affect sources of clean water and sanitation or food and agriculture growth. Similarly, environmental quality, whether natural or man-made, is affected by human behavior – as urbanization occurs, more noise, light pollution, air pollution, transportation, energy generation, radiation harm the environment.
In coherence with many Environmental Health frameworks and policies, Hong Kong is working to protect both human and environmental health. This booklet introduces basic concepts of environment, exposure, and risk in public health; the impact of urbanization from environmental health hazards; and discusses frameworks and policies in place to make our environmental health healthier.

This course aims to enrich teachers’ knowledge of the interaction between environment and human behaviors, and how such interrelated health can be improved through the enhancement of local and global environmental and public health policies.
